Platelet Rich Plasma
PRP is a promising and safe therapeutic option to promote hair growth. The patients own blood is withdrawn and the components separated by using a centrifugation machine. Types of Hair Transplant?
There are two types of treatment available for hair transplant.
1.Follicular Unit Extraction(FUE)
2.Follicular unit transplantation(FUT)
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE
This is the method of Hair transplant surgery in which the trichologist manually removes individual hair follicles from scalp and then implants it to bald or thinning areas of the scalp .
Follicular unit transplantation
This is a procedure in which small clusters of hairs or ‘follicular units’ are removed from the donor area of hair in a strip, and inserted into the bald area(recipient area) These are naturally occurring units which if transplanted well, will replicate their natural growth pattern in the recipient area of the scalp.
It’s a very safe procedure if done by an experienced dermatologist / trichologist . It’s a day surgery . There is no need for admission .
Side effects – Mild pain will be experienced by the patients . There are a set of instructions to be followed after procedure . If adhered to correctly , there is good mainatance of hair growth .
What is PRP?
PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma.
Plasma is a component of blood and is rich in growth factors.
How is it done?
10-15ml of your own blood is withdrawn and processed to obtain Platelet Rich Plasma.
This PRP is then injected intradermally into your scalp by trained professionals.
Why it is done?
PRP is done in cases of hair loss.
In case of sudden hair loss, it is done so as to provide nutrition to the scalp to increase hair growth.
In case of patterned hair loss, it is combined with topical solutions to stimulate hair growth and prevent further loss.
How Frequently is it done?
For acute hair loss/telogen effluvium, it can be done once a month for 4 months.
For patterned hair loss, it should be done once a month for 4-6 months and be followed by maintainence sessions, once every 3 months.
What are results expected?
An increase in the density of the hair and thickness of strands can be seen in 6 months
What are the side effects?
It is a relatively safe procedure.
Transient side effects like mild headache/heaviness and bruising at the site of withdrawal of blood can occur.
What home care should be followed?
It is a relatively safe procedure.
Washing of scalp can be done after 12-16 hours.
Application of topical solutions can be started after 24 hours
Avoid scalp/hair procedures like colouring, massages, straightening etc for a week after the procedure.
